Welcome from the Conference Chair

I am very pleased that the IWA SG on Diffuse Pollution and Eutrophication has chosen Vienna as location and IAWD (International Association of Water Service Companies in the Danube River Catchment Area) as the host for the upcoming 4th Regional IWA Conference on Diffuse Pollution and Eutrophication to be held in September 2020.
IAWD has not only hosted several IWA events, among them the World Water Congress 2008, but has more than 25 years of experience of working with water utilities and national water utility associations in the Danube region. Since 2013, IAWD has been implementing the “Danube Water Program”, which is a capacity building program for the Danube region water supply and wastewater sector to achieve smart policies, strong utilities and sustainable Services, jointly with the World Bank. With groundwater making up most of the Danube region’s drinking water supply, protecting it from diffuse pollution and over-abstraction is a top priority in the region. In this context, the 4th Regional IWA Conference on Diffuse Pollution and Eutrophication will strongly contribute to the Danube countries’ goal to restore and maintain cleaner water resources while managing its use for a more ecologically balanced and healthier water supply.
By partnering with institutions such as the Vienna University for Technology, the Federal Ministry Republic of Austria for Sustainability and Tourism, the Austrian Association for Gas and Water and the Environment Agency Austria we are convinced that the 4th Regional IWA Conference on Diffuse Pollution and Eutrophication will be a must-attend event for researchers, scientists, practitioners, NGOs, and policy-makers in the region.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Vienna next year!

Dipl. Ing. Walter Kling,
President of IAWD

Welcome from the Chair of the IWA SG on DP&E

It is my pleasure to invite you to Vienna, Austria to join the 4th IWA Regional Conference on Diffuse Pollution and Eutrophication in September 2020.
Vienna is situated in the heart of Europe. With woods, grassland, parks and gardens accounting for around half its area, Vienna is the city in Europe with the highest ratio of green space. “Urban green” such as Stadtpark is joined by the woods and grassland of Prater, the extensive Schönbrunn Palace Gardens, sections of the Vienna Woods, vineyards, farmland and the wetlands of the legendary Danube River. In Vienna one may visit a rich heritage and latest achievements in art and architecture ‐ from the historic city center – a UNESCO world cultural heritage site – to modern facets like the University of Economy or the trendy Museums Quartier, one of the world’s ten largest culture complexes.
Given Vienna’s unique setting, I would like to welcome you to participate in this conference to meet great experts from the region and beyond. The conference will address core issues in diffuse pollution and eutrophication, and other related issues such as the health-related aspects of diffuse pollution. In this regard, we are pleased to announce a cooperation with the IWA SG on Health-Related Water Microbiology (HRWM), which is involved in the Programme Committee of the conference. Almost ten years after the joint conference between our groups in Rotorua, this cooperation is follow-up of the Rotorua Declaration, which was a mutual agreement of our SGs to join hydrology, microbiology and modelling.
I strongly encourage your participation in discussing high quality research and practice, building a network with wonderful people.

I look forward to seeing you in Vienna in September 2020!

Chair, IWA Specialist Group on Diffuse Pollution and Eutrophication
